Before choosing a correct PS foam board, We shall firstly understand why the PS foam board itself would blister:

1) The ripening period is too short

The ripening period of PS foam board core is too short, and more foaming gas will be left. With the gradual increase of temperature in summer, the gas in the board core will become active and easier to release outward, which is the key to the blistering of KT board.

2) Inferior face liners

Some manufacturers choose fake outer liners or inferior outer liners in order to reduce the cost of raw materials. The high-quality double-layer composite liners can resist the corrosion of the back glue and avoid the blistering problem caused by the gas leakage in the board core.

3) Save time and cost

In order to pursue production capacity, some manufacturers will adjust and accelerate the speed of the PS foam board lamination production. Because the heating lamination time is too short, the face liners and the board core show “false adhesion,” The position without adhesion will be propped up by the board core gas, thus forming bubbles.

Blistering Phenomenon of PS Foam Board

4) Face liners overstretched

To save materials, most manufacturers will over-stretch the face liners during production. When the adhesive vinyl film is mounted on the KT board, it will erode the surface and produce gas, resulting in blistering.

There are many types of PS foam boards on the market. In summer, choosing PS foam boards covered with high-quality composite liner films is recommended. The face liners on the surface can isolate the corrosion of the back glue on the board core and eliminate the blistering problem after mounting.
Of course, there is also the mounting processing method of end customers, which is also a source of problems. It needs a comprehensive analysis to find out the specific reasons.

PS foam boards are cost-effective and ideal for a wide variety of short-term interior graphic arts applications, including point-of-purchase displays, exhibitions, temporary signs, models, presentation boards, photo mounting, and picture framing.

What is the difference between the KT board (PS foam board) and PVC board?

At the event site, KT board and PVC board are widely used. But many people can’t tell the difference between the KT board and the PVC board. Some even think that the two materials belong to the same kind. As an event organizer, it’s a layman. Let Skyline Composites tell you the difference between the two.

KT board is a new type of material formed by foaming PS particles into the board core and laminating on the surface. The board body is straight, light, not easy to deteriorate, and easy to process. It can be directly screen-printed on the board (screen printing board), painted (paint adaptability needs to be tested), mounted back glue picture, and spray painting. It is often used in advertising display and promotion, architectural decoration, culture and art, packaging, and so on.

In terms of advertising, one is the mounting lining board for exhibition, display and announcement of product publicity information release, and the other is widely used in one-time screen printing, which is especially suitable for large-scale unified publicity activities.

PVC foam board, also known as Chevron board and Andy board, is made of polyvinyl chloride. There are three main product styles. The first is the Co-extruded foam board, having a layer of non-foaming rigid skin on the surface that is extra smooth and flat. The second is Celuka foam board, having a layer of hard skin on the surface that is smooth and dense. The third is free foam board, with no skin on the surface. The face is in a fine concave-convex shape (pitted surface).

From the product introduction, the most significant difference between the two kinds of boards is that the chemical raw materials are different.

The difference in application is: KT board is mainly used for indoor advertising display boards, while PVC foam board is frequently used for outdoor advertising display in the advertising industry. In other aspects, PVC foam board is more popular, and its relative value will be more costly than KT board. Therefore, the difference between the two depends on the specific purpose.

Of course, the application in the activity site depends on the needs of customers and the requirements for material quality.

The above is a simple analysis from Skyline Composites. You can go to our official website (www.skylinecomposites.com ) to learn more about the details of our advertising boards.

KT board(PS foam board) is a new type of advertising material made of PS particles through foaming to form board core and surface lamination. The board body is straight, light, not easy to deteriorate, and easy to process. The production process of KT board can be divided into cold lamination and hot lamination. The products produced by these two different processes are cold lamination and hot lamination boards.

Its application includes mounting, UV printing, screen printing, paint, modeling, and more. PS foam boards are usually used in advertising display and promotion, architectural decoration, culture and art, packaging, printing, etc. In terms of advertising, one is the mounting lining board for tradeshows, display, and announcement of product publicity information, and the other is widely used in one-time screen printing, which is especially suitable for large-scale unified publicity activities.

The standard colors of the KT board are white and black. In fact, they also have red, blue, yellow, green, and other colors. KT boards are available in a variety of sizes, including standard sheet size 1220x2440mm (48 “x96″)and standard thickness in 5mm or 10mm. KT board is a new material made of polystyrene (PS) PS particles through foaming to form board core and surface lamination. The board body is straight, light, not easy to deteriorate, and easy to process. It can directly mount photo pictures and adhesive back stickers on the board. It is widely used in signboard production, corporate culture wall advertising, display and promotion, advertising design, and packaging. Its material is light, flat, easy to process, and low cost. The standard size is 1.22m wide and 2.44m long.

Nowadays, with the development of society and the improvement of people’s living standards, KT board is often used in indoor layout, especially suitable for office layout, such as large-scale KT board decorative painting.

In addition, the KT board is widely used in indoor and outdoor advertising, especially for large-scale unified publicity activities.

Whether the KT board is used outdoors or indoors, it usually depends on relevant combined materials and fabrication processes. Indoor KT board advertising printing is generally printed with an indoor photo back glue, laminated with matt film or glossy film, mounted on one side or double sides of the KT board with a cold mounting machine, while those placed outdoors are generally printed with outdoor photo self-adhesive, laminated with matt film or glossy film, which can also be mounted on one side or double sides of the KT board with a cold mounting machine.

Regarding the price of KT board printing, it is relatively more favorable compared with that of PVC foam board, and the printing effect is remarkable. However, KT board printing is suitable for short-term use. If used for a long time, it is easy to blister due to the reasons of the board texture itself and the change of weather. We suggest replacing the KT board with a PVC foam board for long-term use.

Reasons for blistering of KT board

Bubble phenomenon: after mounting the photo picture on the KT board, the picture film is arched to form bubbles.

Bubble cause:

  1. The ripening period of the foam core is short.
  2. The PS film on the board surface is too thin.
  3. The glue on the back of the picture reacts with the PS film.
  • The environment is too hot and cold, and the temperature difference between day and night is too big.

At present, most advertising production uses acrylic and PVC materials, which are recommended every time you go to advertising companies.

In fact, these two are the most commonly used primary materials. They are mainly used for mounting pictures on the surface and engraving for modeling.

Engraving mainly involves PVC and foam boards. PVC specifically makes characters and models, and foam board mostly makes some indoor signs, custom shapes, display panels, etc.

So what is the difference between foam board and PVC foam board?

KT board

1. Different materials:

PVC is a plastic material, and the foam board is a foam material.

PVC foam board: the main component is polyvinyl chloride. Foam board: mainly composed of polystyrene.

The foam board material is a foam board, the inner foam is foaming, and the outer layer of the sheet is very light, and the price is low.

Because the core is too soft (the foam is flat), it is not suitable to make complex models and shapes, so it is not suitable for complex sculptures.

Of course, you can do it carefully with a manual knife, but the effect is obvious. The result is not as good as that of PVC foam board.

The Foam board is not sunscreen and waterproof. In case of exposure to the sun and rain, the surface will blister and deform, which will affect the image surface quality.

Foam board is easy to cut and install, but the surface is relatively fragile, and it is easy to leave traces when it is accidentally touched.

PVC is foamed with plastic inside and PVC veneer outside. Due to its high density, the weight is 3-4 times heavier than foam board. Of course, the price is also 3-4 times higher,

The hardness is relatively high. A good PVC foam board can’t be pinched with your fingers. It’s terrific to use this to make complex models and fine carving.

Secondly, PVC is sunscreen and waterproof and will not deform in case of exposure and rain.

PVC also has the characteristics of fire and heat resistance. It is mainly used to replace wood as a fireproof material.

The surface of the PVC foam sheet is very smooth, has high hardness, and not easy to scratch.

2. Different use-values:

PVC foam board is more widely used and has better material characteristics. PVC foam board is relatively rigid and much heavier than foam board. Due to the high density of PVC, the weight is 3-4 times heavier than foam board. Of course, the price is also 3-4 times higher. Some PVC prices are even more than + 5-10 times higher than foam board.

3. Different application ranges:

Foam board is mainly used for indoor short-term advertising displays. It works as a backboard for stickers, PP paper with mounted and printed pictures.

The main reason is that the material of the foam board is light and easy to install.

PVC is generally used for outdoor medium and long-term advertising display.

Foam board is mainly used in the indoor sign industry, DIY production (especially aircraft model production), and cosplay props.

PVC is mainly used for outdoor billboards, site signs, etc. It can also be used indoors, such as signs and placards in harsh environments such as workshops and plants.

Other uses: PVC is more used for laser engraving characters and various cultural walls and background walls, mainly for long-term use.

Foam board is used for various special-shaped labels, hands-up cards, and supermarket personality cards, primarily for short-term display.

How to select:

The scratch resistance and durability of PVC foam boards are better than that of foam boards. However, the cost of PVC foam board is much higher than that of foam board. Therefore, which one to choose depends on the cost control, use scenario, and time limit.

4. Summary:

  1. PVC is a plastic material, and foam board is a foam material.
  2. PVC material is rigid and suitable for machine engraving. Foam board material is brittle and can not stand machine engraving, but it is ideal for manual engraving.
  3. Both PVC board and foam board can be used to mount the picture. PVC board is used outdoors, foam board is used indoors, PVC board can be used for a long time, and foam board is used for a short time.
  4. PVC board has high hardness and is not easy to cut by hand. Foam board has low hardness and can be cut by hand.
  5. PVC has strong scratch resistance, and the foam board is fragile, which is easy to produce scratches.
  6. PVC has strong durability and is suitable for long-term use. Foam board has weak durability and is ideal for medium and short-term use. (within 1-2 years).
  7. PVC board is suitable for outdoor use, and Foam board is ideal for indoor use.
  8. PVC is heavy and needs to be reinforced. Foam is light and easy to install.
  9. The price of PVC is 3-4 times the price of PVC board (also 3-4 times the weight). Better PVC is more than 5-10 times.
  10. PVC also has the characteristics of fire and heat resistance. It can replace wood and be used as a fireproof material.
  11. PVC is more used for CNC engraving characters and various cultural walls and background walls, which are mostly used for a long time.
  12. Foam board is used for various special-shaped labels, hands-up cards, and supermarket personality cards, primarily for short-term display. Foam board is not weatherproof and waterproof. In case of exposure to the sun and rain, the surface will blister and deform, which will affect the image surface quality. PVC board is weather-resistant and waterproof and will not twist in case of exposure and rain.

KT board is a kind of plate-like material made of polystyrene. The PS material particles are foamed into a board core and pressed by surface coating. KT board is light, not easy to deteriorate, and convenient for subsequent cutting and processing. It is widely used in advertising display, architectural decoration, cultural publicity walls, and packaging. The traditional KT board adopts film coating and board coating process, which has high labor and time cost. The difference is that UV flatbed printer brings different production methods to KT board processing.

At the earliest stage, KT board was divided into hot board and cold board. Now it is generally divided into PS film surface KT board, paper surface KT board, and PVC film surface cold-pressed KT board. KT board is widely used in indoor and outdoor publicity. Besides exhibitions, it is also applied in the construction and home decoration industry, such as KT board decorative painting. UV flatbed printer is a fantastic tool for printing decorative pictures, which is also suitable for KT board printing.

UV flatbed printers can print patterns directly on KT board. They save many traditional processes and significantly shorten the production time. They are especially suitable for small orders requiring changeable pictures and texts and can quickly respond to customer needs. In addition, the UV printer with a Ricoh nozzle and white color varnish scheme can also achieve oil painting like a three-dimensional relief effect.

For KT board printing, besides photo mounting and direct printing by UV flatbed printer, there are also devices with dual characteristics of UV curing and photo, such as “Mr. board”, which can also reach a printing speed of more than 40 square meters per hour. Of course, the needs of customers are always different. For advertising processing users requiring higher printing speed and printing needs of multiple materials and shapes, UV printers may have more advantages in versatility and capacity improvement.

The UV printing solution of KT board is to print patterns directly on KT board through UV flatbed printer. Through UV flatbed printer, processors can complete both large orders and small orders quickly. For users with small batch orders, delivery on the same day can be realized.

KT board UV flatbed printer adopts G5 nozzle, which can print 3D relief effect through the color configuration of color + white + varnish.

As one of the primary materials of the current media, KT board is suitable for medium and short-term advertising production with high-quality requirements and will not be deformed when used as poster board, writing board, promotion display board, etc. The solution of KT board UV printer not only brings different production modes for KT board advertising production but also gives advertising manufacturers a  new choice.

Structural components of both

Expanded Polystyrene foam board, also known as foam board and EPS board, is a white object heated and molded by heating polystyrene beads containing volatile liquid foaming agents after heating.

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Board(KT board) is a new type of material formed by foaming chemical particles into board core and laminating on the surface. The main component also contains polystyrene. Common production processes can be divided into cold lamination and hot lamination. The products produced by these two different processes are called cold laminated board and hot laminated board. The popular colors of KT board core are white and black. In fact, they also have red, blue, yellow, green, and other colors.

Advantages of both

  •  Expanded polystyrene (EPS)foam board

The Expanded polystyrene (EPS)foam board has the advantages of low density, high recovery rate, and independent bubble structure. Secondly, the surface water absorption is low, and the anti-permeability is good. And acid, alkali, salt, oil, and other organic solvent corrosion resistance, excellent aging resistance. Furthermore, it does not flow at high temperatures and does not crack at low temperatures.

1. Protect the main structure of the building and extend the service life of the building. External insulation is to place the insulation layer outside the structure, which reduces the stress caused by structural deformation caused by temperature change, and reduces the corrosion of harmful substances in the air and ultraviolet rays to the structure.

2. Effectively eliminate the “thermal bridge.” In the past, internal insulation was used, “thermal bridge” was difficult to avoid, while external insulation effectively prevented the generation of thermal bridge and condensation.

3. The moisture temperature of the wall can be improved. Generally, the steam insulation layer is required for the internal insulation, while the temperature permeability of the external insulation material is much stronger than that of the main structure. Generally, condensation will not occur inside the wall. The temperature of the whole wall body of the structural layer is increased, which further enhances the thermal insulation performance of the wall.

4. It is conducive to the stability of room temperature. The external wall external insulation is adopted. Because the structural layer with large heat storage capacity of the wall is inside the wall, it is conducive to the stability of room temperature.

5. Increase the use area of the house. It can avoid the damage of secondary decoration to the insulation layer.

  • Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Board /(KT board)

1. The bubbling of hot laminated foam board is mainly caused by short ripening periods and too thin laminate film. The bubbling of cold laminated foam board is usually caused by poor gluing or too long direct sunlight exposure during production.

2. Price comparison: the low price of hot laminated foam board is mainly due to the short production period, less material, and large production capacity, while the cold laminated foam board is just the opposite.

3. There are many kinds of surfaces on KT board, such as PS surface, paper surface, and back glue surface.

4. KT boards are mostly used in indoor advertising. The general requirement for boards is to ensure no blistering and deformation.

Application fields of both

Expanded polystyrene (EPS)foam board is mainly used for building walls, roof insulation, composite board insulation, cold storage, air conditioning, vehicle, ship insulation, floor heating, decoration, and carving.

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Board (KT board)

is mainly used in the advertising industry, logo industry, architectural decoration industry, culture, art and packaging industry, printing industry,  and cosplay props.

Although Expanded polystyrene (EPS)foam board and Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Board (KT board) are made of expandable polystyrene beads, they also have different structures due to different processes. Before use, we must understand the difference between the two to avoid confusion.
