PVC foam board comprises the chemical composition of Poly Vinyl Chloride, light calcium carbonate, foaming agents, etc. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications.

PVC foam board is manufactured through a series of production processes. Next, we will introduce the PVC foam board’s production principle and process flow.

Raw material mixing includes two steps: cold mixing and hot mixing. After weighing the PVC resin and various auxiliary materials, put them into the hot mixing pot to stir evenly and automatically put them into the cold mixing pot to mix and cool. After cold mixing, the materials are sieved by the screening machine and stored. The powdered material enters the extruder from the hopper on the extrusion line, with the continuous forward movement and the temperature change in the extrusion process. The material slowly changes from solid to viscous flow state, and the foaming agent decomposes. Due to the high pressure in the extruder and die, the gas released from the decomposition of the foaming agent dissolves into the PVC melt under high pressure. After PVC melt is extruded from the die, the gas dissolved in the melt expands and foams rapidly due to the sudden loss of pressure of the melt. It immediately enters the calibration units for cooling and calibrating and then enters the water tank for further cooling. Finally, the product is cut into a certain length after passing through the haul-off machine.

Production process flow:

In China, PVC foam board is mainly produced by domestic PVC skinned foam board production lines. Its production process is as follows:

Raw material allocation – mixing by high-speed mixer – extrusion by extruder – foaming – cooling and calibration – spraying cooling – haul-off – cutting – stacking – Inspection – warehousing of finished products.

KT board is a new material made of polystyrene (PS) PS particles through foaming to form board core and surface lamination. The board body is straight, light, not easy to deteriorate, and easy to process. It can directly mount photo pictures and adhesive back stickers on the board. It is widely used in signboard production, corporate culture wall advertising, display and promotion, advertising design, and packaging. Its material is light, flat, easy to process, and low cost. The standard size is 1.22m wide and 2.44m long.

Nowadays, with the development of society and the improvement of people’s living standards, KT board is often used in indoor layout, especially suitable for office layout, such as large-scale KT board decorative painting.

In addition, the KT board is widely used in indoor and outdoor advertising, especially for large-scale unified publicity activities.

 Whether the KT board is used outdoors or indoors, it usually depends on relevant combined materials and fabrication processes. Indoor KT board advertising printing is generally printed with an indoor photo back glue, laminated with matt film or glossy film, mounted on one side or double sides of the KT board with a cold mounting machine, while those placed outdoors are generally printed with outdoor photo self-adhesive, laminated with matt film or glossy film, which can also be mounted on one side or double sides of the KT board with a cold mounting machine.

Regarding the price of KT board printing, it is relatively more favorable compared with that of PVC foam board, and the printing effect is remarkable. However, KT board printing is suitable for short-term use. If used for a long time, it is easy to blister due to the reasons of the board texture itself and the change of weather. Reasons for blistering of KT board

Bubble phenomenon: after mounting the photo picture on the KT board, the picture film is arched to form bubbles.

Bubble cause:

  1. The ripening period of the foam core is short.
  2. The PS film on the board surface is too thin.
  3. The glue on the back of the picture reacts with the PS film.
  • The environment is too hot and cold, and the temperature difference between day and night is too big.

At present, most advertising production uses acrylic and PVC materials, which are recommended every time you go to advertising companies.

In fact, these two are the most commonly used primary materials. They are mainly used for mounting pictures on the surface and engraving for modeling.

Engraving mainly involves PVC and foam boards. PVC specifically makes characters and models, and foam board mostly makes some indoor signs, custom shapes, display panels, etc.

So what is the difference between foam board and PVC foam board?

KT board

1. Different materials:

PVC is a plastic material, and the foam board is a foam material.

PVC foam board: the main component is polyvinyl chloride. Foam board: mainly composed of polystyrene.

The foam board material is a foam board, the inner foam is foaming, and the outer layer of the sheet is very light, and the price is low.

Because the core is too soft (the foam is flat), it is not suitable to make complex models and shapes, so it is not suitable for complex sculptures.

Of course, you can do it carefully with a manual knife, but the effect is obvious. The result is not as good as that of PVC foam board.

 The Foam board is not sunscreen and waterproof. In case of exposure to the sun and rain, the surface will blister and deform, which will affect the image surface quality.

 Foam board is easy to cut and install, but the surface is relatively fragile, and it is easy to leave traces when it is accidentally touched.

PVC is foamed with plastic inside and PVC veneer outside. Due to its high density, the weight is 3-4 times heavier than foam board. Of course, the price is also 3-4 times higher,

The hardness is relatively high. A good PVC foam board can’t be pinched with your fingers. It’s terrific to use this to make complex models and fine carving.

Secondly, PVC is sunscreen and waterproof and will not deform in case of exposure and rain.

PVC also has the characteristics of fire and heat resistance. It is mainly used to replace wood as a fireproof material.

The surface of the PVC foam sheet is very smooth, has high hardness, and not easy to scratch.

2. Different use-values:

PVC foam board is more widely used and has better material characteristics. PVC foam board is relatively rigid and much heavier than foam board. Due to the high density of PVC, the weight is 3-4 times heavier than foam board. Of course, the price is also 3-4 times higher. Some PVC prices are even more than + 5-10 times higher than foam board.

3. Different application ranges:

Foam board is mainly used for indoor short-term advertising displays. It works as a backboard for stickers, PP paper with mounted and printed pictures.

The main reason is that the material of the foam board is light and easy to install.

PVC is generally used for outdoor medium and long-term advertising display.

 Foam board is mainly used in the indoor sign industry, DIY production (especially aircraft model production), and cosplay props.

PVC is mainly used for outdoor billboards, site signs, etc. It can also be used indoors, such as signs and placards in harsh environments such as workshops and plants.

Other uses: PVC is more used for laser engraving characters and various cultural walls and background walls, mainly for long-term use.

Foam board is used for various special-shaped labels, hands-up cards, and supermarket personality cards, primarily for short-term display.

How to select:

The scratch resistance and durability of PVC foam boards are better than that of foam boards. However, the cost of PVC foam board is much higher than that of foam board. Therefore, which one to choose depends on the cost control, use scenario, and time limit.

Corona treatment

It has been found that corona treatment is an effective method to improve the adhesion of UV ink! The positive and negative electrodes of the corona device are respectively connected to the ground and the induced air nozzle. The high voltage and high cycle wave is used to make the electric shock molecules eject from the induced air nozzle and accelerate to the positive electrode with high-energy free electrons. In this way, the polarity of the non-absorbent material can be changed. It increases surface roughness and strengthens the combination ability with the ink, finally reaches the purpose of achieving the proper UV ink adhesion and improving the adhesion fastness of the ink layer.

The surface tension stability of corona-treated materials is poor, and the corona effect will gradually weaken as time goes on. Especially in an environment with high humidity, the corona effect will reduce faster. If a corona-treated substrate is used, it must cooperate with the supplier to ensure the freshness of the substrate. Common corona treatment materials include PE, PP, nylon, PVC, pet, etc.

UV ink adhesion promoters

In many cases, cleaning the substrate with alcohol will improve the adhesion of UV ink on the substrate. If the adhesion of the substrate to UV ink is inferior or the product has high requirements for UV ink adhesion, the primer / UV ink adhesion promoter to promote UV ink adhesion can be considered.

After the primer is applied to the non-absorbent substrate, the adhesion of UV ink improves and achieves the ideal adhesion effect. Unlike corona treatment, chemical primer materials do not contain non-polar oil molecules, which can effectively eliminate the instability of the corona effect caused by the migration of such molecules. However, the application scope of primer is selective, and the result is better for substrates such as glass, ceramics, metal, acrylic, and pet.

UV ink curing degree

Generally speaking, when the UV ink is not fully cured, we can observe the poor adhesion of UV ink on the non-absorbent substrate. To improve the curing degree of UV ink, we can start from the following aspects:

1) Increase the power of UV curing lamps.

2) Reduce printing speed

3) Extend the curing time.

4) Check whether the UV lamp and its accessories work regularly.

5) Reduce the ink layer thickness.

Other methods

Heating: in the screen printing industry, it is recommended to heat the substrate before UV curing when printing on the substrate that is difficult to adhere. After heating with near-infrared light or far-infrared light for 15-90 seconds, it can strengthen the adhesion of UV ink on the substrate.

Varnish: if the UV ink still has adhesion problems on the substrate after adopting the above suggestions, a layer of protective varnish can be coated on the surface of the print.

Cutting: if there is only an adhesion problem during cutting, it is recommended to cut the substrate to the required size before printing. The cutting edge of the cutting tool must be sharp. A rotary cutter will cut better than ordinary straight blade scissors.

What is PUR hot melt adhesive?
