Retardant is defined as a material that has been chemically treated to self-extinguish. The treated material can self-extinguish and does not melt or drip, therefore, cause less damage to humans. In a word, fire-retardant materials have been chemically treated to slow ignition, burning, or actually self-extinguish when exposed to an open flame. Original material needs chemically treated to retard the spread of flame.
